In my earlier post here, we talked about ways that make Intermittent Fasting (IF) sustainable so we don’t feel deprived.

There may be times we have cravings in the process of IF. In this article, I want to share how Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) can reduce sugar cravings, supress appetite and make the IF process more sustainable.

What Is Apple Cider Vinegar?

ACV is vinegar made from fermented apples. In the process of fermantation, the sugars from the apple turn into alcohol which is fermented again to convert the alcohol to acetic acid.

The brownish color, with a ‘cobweb-like’ substance floating in the ACV, is called the ‘mother’. It gets richer in nutrients as the ACV matures. It is ideal to choose ACV that is made raw, unfiltered and made from organic apples.

The acetic acid in ACV slows down the rate at which our stomach digest the food going into our small intestines. This slows down the breakdown of carbohydrates and give our body more time to remove glucose from the blood, reducing a sugar spike in our blood sugars.

Important: Do not choose ACV that contains honey or added sugar as it will break the fast.

Why Keeping Blood Sugar Levels Low Is Important

When we are not eating, our blood sugar levels drop, causing our insulin levels to fall. Our body thinks that we are starving and will look for other sources of fuel, such as the stored energy in our body starting with glycogen. When our storage of glycogen falls, we start buring fat. Hence this is why a prolonged fast promotes weight loss.

It may sound overwhelming to (literally) “swallow” ACV given its naturally pungent smell especially on a first time.

Here are some hacks to make your ACV drink more enjoyable:

1. Start with a small amount

For a start, try one tablespoon with a glass of water. If it’s bitter or sour to swallow, add some pink or kosher salt. It will reduce the sourness and add minerals to your drink.

2. Add varieties to your ACV drink

Play around with your ACV drink. Combine a variety of ingredients to make it a mocktail. You can consider the below ingredients:

  • Lemon slices
  • Ginger/Tumeric shot
  • Cinnamon
  • Mint leaves
  • Pink/Kosher salt
  • Ice cubes, sparking water
  • Sugar substitutes, Honey

3. Use it as a dressing on your salad

An easy way to reap the benefits of ACV is to use it as a salad dressing. Combine ACV with olive oil, salt and garlic. It helps to mask off the pungent smell of ACV.

End Thoughts

Apple Cider Vinegar on it’s own is not a plesant thing. Fortunately, there are ways to make ACV more platable and reap its benefits.  Which one works the best for you and why? Is there other ways you consume ACV? Would love to hear your thoughts and comments!

Do you know what is the next “painful” problem you face when you have acne?

It’s dealing with acne scars that take a long time (or never) to go away.

Do you agree?

I was trying to manage my hormonal acne which appeared in my mid 30s. To find out more about my journey, you can read it here.

How acne scars are formed

Acne scars form when acne has penetrated the skin deeply, damaging the skin and tissue beneath it. The body repairs the damage by producing collagen. If the body doesn’t produce enough collagen, acne scars form.

How to treat acne scars

Prevention is better than cure. One way to prevent acne scars is to reduce inflammation in the body. Junk food and sugar causes inflammation to the body and should be avoided as much as possible.

The next way is to treat acne as soon as it forms. We should not squeeze or pop the pimple as it will only further agitate the skin. We should not over cleanse as this will strip the natural oil glands that moisturize our skin.

Here are 3 affordable and effective products I used to treat my acne scars

1. Skinceuticals CE Ferulic

Our skin repairs itself by producing collagen.Vitamin C serums stimulate the skin in production of collagen. I highly recommend the CE Ferulic serum as it contains 15% pure vitamin C. I use about 4 drops in the morning for my whole face and my skin texture and scars have lighten tremendously.

2. Differin, Adapalene Gel 0.1 % Acne Treatment*

Differin contains vitamin A which helps regulate cell growth and the skin to repair itself. It repairs the damaged skin cells that caused the scarring. It is a retinoid that works on both the surface and middle layers of the skin. It has helped to smooth my acne scars, improve my overall skin texture after using it consecutively for 2 weeks.

3. Life-flo, Pure Rosehip Seed Oil*

Rosehip oil is a dry oil that is easily absorbed into the skin and is non comedogenic. It contains linoleic acid that reduce hyperpigmentation in scars. I use this weekly when I give myself a Gua Sha Facial.

Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese technique that involves scrapping the skin at certain meridian points and helps to remove toxins and improve blood circulation. I have been doing Gua Sha for some time now.

Are you looking for affordable and effective products to treat acne?

Here are 4 products I used that prevented my acne from reoccuring.

1.  California Gold Nutrition Vitamin D3 softgels

Acne occurs when bacteria attacks our blocked pores, causing it to be inflamed. Vitamin D has anti- inflammatory properties which can help address the inflammatory symptoms of acne. The recommended dosage is 1 capsule per day, there are 360 capsules in  bottle, so it lasts you for almost a year!

2.  Aveeno, Active Naturals, Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser

Personally I prefer a foam cleanser. I find that it doesn’t give you that “artificial squeaky clean” feeling compared to gel or cream cleansers. This cleanser removes excess oil well and does not leave your face feeling dry after washing. A small pump is enough for the whole face, so a little goes a long way, another economically friendly product.

3.  Life-flo, Pure Rosehip Seed Oil

This has always been my go-to skin care whenever I am feeling lazy. A few drops of oil is all you need to keep your skin moisturized.

Oil is important even for acne prone and oily skin as it helps to keep the skin natural oil balanced. Rosehip oil is a good option as it is a ‘dry’ oil and is easily absorbed into the skin. If you are worried it is oily, you can apply a few drops when your face is still a little moist for easier absorption. I use Rosehip oil when I want to give myself a mini gua sha facial massage. To find out the benefits of gua sha, you can read more here.

4.  Differin, Adapalene Gel 0.1 % Acne Treatment

This product is a total life changer for me. Since having acne, my skin had a lot of blackheads.I use this every night for 2 weeks and they were gone. The most significant change is the texture of the skin. Differin contains Adapalene, an active ingredient which can specifically clear acne. Differin is a retinoid (a form of vitamin A) which can reduce inflammation, unclog pores and regulate skin cell growth.

If you are looking for products that are result and and cost effective to treat your acne, I highly recommend these 4 afforable and effective anti-acne products.

You can try treating acne internally (by taking supplements) and externally (by facial products).

iHerb.com offers a wide range of supplements and health care products for your selection. I have been purchasing from them for many years and there are always new surprises. They ship worldwide and offer affordable international shipping for overseas customers.

A while back, a relative came over to visit for Chinese New Year. She saw a photo of me 10 years ago vs now and commented that she could not recognise me at all. She asked if I did plastic surgery.

While I didn’t do plastic surgery, here’s what I gathered looking back at the past 10 years of my life that caused this major change.

1. Emotions

Your emotions affect how you feel about yourself and your overall outlook.

I grew up in a toxic environment with controlling parents who were critique with every of my actions. I was a no confidence person and always in tears.

Due to self-abasement, I didn’t feel I deserve any respect and allowed people to treat me the way they wanted. At the same time, I wanted to feel validated and often threw temper at my friends.

Now I allow myself to feel my emotions. When I am sad, I will take a deep breath and tell myself this shall pass and give myself some space.

2. Lifestyle habits

I turn to food whenever I was unhappy. I was eating several big meals a day and using emotional eating to suppress my feeling of sadness and unfairness. Food high in sugar and fat became my best friend since it was cheap and easily available. Sugar destroys collagen and my skin was constantly breaking out. My weight once shot up to 70Kg (I am 158cm) and I was feeling sluggish all the time.

Now I don’t turn to food when I sad. Instead, I listen to music and take walks to clear my mind.

3. Invisalign

I have imperfect teeth growing up. They were crooked and it affected my confidence to even open my mouth. I was constantly worried about what my friends would think about my teeth each time I speak.

I am glad I made the decision to go for invisalign. It helped remodel my face shape and regained my confidence to smile and speak.

4. Mindset

I used to wallow in self pity and didn’t realise the energy I was bringing to myself and others was draining everyone’s energy.

Over the years, I have learnt to accept my situation and let go of my unhappy childhood. I take things as they come and stop spending time worrying. I just want to treat the people who love me well and be the best version of myself.

5. Self love

Over the last decade, I have learnt to accept my imperfections and embrace for who I am. There will be people who will not like me, but that’s ok. I have friends and family who love me for who I am.

Practicing self love has allowed me to put myself first and make choices that bring the best of me.

6. Gua Sha

One of the things that greatly attributed to the change of my face shape is by doing Gua Sha. I have been consistently doing Gua Sha for a year and the effects are evident.

There are many meridian points on our face. They each represent a certain organ in our body. Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese technique that involves massaging these meridian points to scrape the toxins off and improve blood circulation. When our blood circulation improves, our overall face will look radiant naturally.

You are at a reunion party with classmates you have not seen for years and saw a familiar face.

You recall your classmate used to look old and tired.

Now, they glow from within. You wonder how they did it.

Has this happened to you before?

Want to know the best part?

You too, can acheive the same results.

Here’s what you can do:

1. Cut down the Sugar

Sugar destroys collagen.

It makes the elastin in our collagen stiff, dry, and brittle causing fine lines, wrinkles, and saggy skin. Our aging process speeds up when we consume more sugar.

Cut back on the soda and replace it with Kombucha tea which contains more probiotics. Replace sugary desserts with fresh fruit, plain yogurt, and dark chocolate which are higher in antioxidants.

2. Wear a sunscreen

Do you know that the ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun cause major damage to the skin?

The outer layer of our skin is protected by a cell that contains the pigment melanin. Without sunscreen, the melanin will burn the skin and reduce its elasticity causing premature aging.

3. Eat a healthy diet

Studies have shown that eating a high nutrient diet helps to regenerate skin cells, reduce wrinkles, and help the body to fight against UV rays.

Load up with high Vitamin C-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables and reap the benefits today.

4. Increase your resistance training and exercise regularly

As we age, our body loses muscles and strength. This is a condition known as Sarcopenia. This is why older people tend to have issues maintaining their daily activities. We can do simple resistance training to maintain our strength and power. When we perspire through exercise, it also helps to remove toxins from our bodies and reduces our susceptibility to diseases.

Get moving today!

5. Give yourself a facial Gua Sha in the comfort of your own home

If you have not heard of it, Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese technique that uses a scraping tool to improve your blood circulation.

Do you know that every point on our face is related to a certain organ and reflects our health condition? For example, having crow’s feet wrinkle may mean there is insufficient Qi in our blood.

By massaging these points, we can activate our facial muscles, improve blood circulation and bring a natural glow to our face to look younger.

You follow the latest skin care trends and try products that hit the shelves, yet your skin condition doesn’t improve?

Has this happened to you before?

As we age, our skin loses collagen and elasticity. At the same time, our skin loses hydration. With these factors combined, our skin will look dull and we appear to look older than our actual age.

The good news is there are ways to bring the glow back!

Here are some common causes of dull skin and how you can revive it.

1. Your skin is clogged

You wash your face, apply brightening serums and creams but your skin is still dull. You might have missed out on the most important part- Exfoliation.

By exfoliating, you remove excess oil and dead skin cells that have oxidized on your face over time. This creates a fresh canvas for your skincare products to absorb better.

Solution: Using a peel mask and facial scrubs can help to remove blackheads and dead skin cells. Use a facial scrub weekly and a peel mask monthly to avoid excessive irritation.

2. You are dehydrated and it reflects on your skin

Our skin is the largest organ of our body. Hence, we need to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. When our skin dehydrates, it will appear to be dry, itchy, and form wrinkles. It will give us a dull and uneven complexion.

Solution: Keeping ourselves hydrated throughout the day is important. We should reduce our intake of caffeine beverages such as coffee, tea, and energy drinks. They are diuretics and cause the body to produce more urine resulting in greater water loss.

3. Your blood circulation is poor

Our overall well-being is reflected through the signs of aging on our faces. Certain points on our face relate to different organs of our body. Massaging those points can help to detoxify the body which in turn brings a glow to our face.

Solution: Facial Gua Sha is a technique that involves scraping the skin in an upward motion to enhance blood circulation. When we detox our skin, it helps to lift up our facial features, reduce wrinkles and fine lines.

I have created a course with a step-by-step guide on how to use Gua Sha on your face and neck here.

4. You are not eating a healthy diet

As the saying goes, “You are what you eat”.

The food we eat reflects our facial complexion. A diet high in sugar, fat, and salt is generally low or has no nutritional value. It does not stimulate our cells to promote collagen growth leading to dull skin.

Solution: A balanced diet is vital to our well-being. We should avoid sugar as it damages collagen production. We can substitute them with antioxidant-rich foods such as berries. Foods that are high in healthy fats, such as salmon, nuts, and avocado are anti-inflammatory for the body.

5. Environmental factors

Environmental conditions such as air pollution and excessive sun exposure cause dull skin.

The germs and bacteria in the air can clog our pores. UV rays can penetrate the outer layers of our skin which in turn hits the deeper layers and damage skin cells.

Solution: Washing and exfoliating regularly prevents clogs in our skin. Applying sunscreen helps to shield against UV rays and pollution. Using an antioxidant serum can help stop free radicals in the environment from harming our skin.

Try these remedies and bring the glow back to your skin

People who tend to succeed do one thing very well.

That is, they stay consistent.

Are you looking for ways to alleviate the common signs of aging on your face?

You might be wondering, is this even possible?

Believe me, I understand how frustrating it is to see the wrinkles on your face every day.

I have been doing Gua Sha for some time now and here are some simple steps which have helped me.

Whether you are a new or a seasoned veteran to Gua Sha, I hope you find the post useful.

Here are the 5 common signs of aging:

1. Crow’s feet (鱼尾纹)

Crow’s feet are fine lines and wrinkles found at the outer corner of our eyes. This is usually an indication of weak Qi in the bloodstream.

Using a Gua Sha tool, start from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner. Repeat on the bottom of the eye

2. Laugh line (法令纹)

As the name calls it, laugh lines are most visible when a person smiles or laughs. They are wrinkles around the outer corner of the mouth and eyes.

Laugh lines are generally caused by the repetition of facial movements (frowning, smiling, laughing), sun exposure, and genetics.

It could also be an indication of high blood sugar in the body. Eating foods rich in Vitamin D (e.g. mushroom) helps the body produce Osteocalcin which controls the blood sugar level.

Place the Gua Sha tool on the side of the nose and gently scrape across the face. Repeat on both sides.

3. Forehead wrinkle (抬头纹)

Forehead wrinkles are the lines across our forehead usually due to repetitive forehead expressions.

It is also an indication of insufficient “Yang” Energy in our body and Cerebral Hypoxia- a decrease of oxygen supply to the brain.

Place the Gua Sha tool on the middle of the forehead and scrape across. Repeat on both sides.

4. Under lip wrinkle (唇下纹)

Under lip wrinkles appear at the side of the lips mainly caused by aging and sun exposure. It can be an indication of kidney deficiency and insufficient Qi and blood.

Place the Gua Sha tool on the side of the lips and scrape across to about 2 fingers away. Repeat on both sides.

5. Neck wrinkle(颈纹)

Neck wrinkles are the lines found across the neck. It is one of the most visible signs of aging. It is a result of the skin losing elasticity and being exposed to UV over time.

Place the Gua Sha tool on the neck and scrape downwards to the collar bone.

I have created a step-by-step full Gua Sha course on the face that can help you lift and shape up your facial features, improve your overall health.

Start reaping the benefits of Gua Sha today!

In our early 20s, most of us have been through the stage of partying, staying up all night long, eating junk food to replace our main meals.

The fact is, as we age, our body metabolism slows down. Lifestyle illnesses are now happening to people of a much younger age. It is easy to take our health for granted especially when we do not see the long term effects now.

Surely, you don’t want to regret by then.

Here are 5 baby steps you can take today:

1. Sleep early

Do you know that our body has a built-in clock within? Each of our organ repairs at a scheduled time daily. 11 pm to 3 am is a crucial time as the body repairs for nutrition and cell regeneration. Aim to sleep before 11 pm and let your body rebuild and repair itself.

Doze off to dreamland and your body will take care of the rest.

2. Practice healthy living

Our body metabolism slows down as we age, by about 10% each decade after our twenties. A slow metabolism rate may lead to weight gain causing illnesses. We can make small changes by reducing processed food, limiting alcohol consumption, and opting for healthier options whenever possible. Incorporating fruits and vegetables which are high in fiber can keep us full longer.

3. Get active and moving

After the age of 30, our body loses muscle tissues more easily. This worsens if we lead a sedentary lifestyle. A sedentary lifestyle increases the cause of mortality and our risk of cardiovascular diseases. Research has shown that living a sedentary lifestyle is the new smoking. Start small by taking short walk breaks at work and incorporating fun activities within the day to keep active.

4. Build up your calcium level

Between the age of 25 to 50, our bone density generally remains stable with an equal amount of bones formed and broken. After this age, our bone resorption outpaces bone formation. There is a saying that we should start storing calcium early just like we start saving early for a rainy day. Dairy, canned sardines, and tofu are good sources of calcium.

5. Go for health screening yearly

It’s never too early to go for health screening. Many lifestyle illnesses are happening to people as young as 30 years old. Going for checks early helps detect and prevent it from getting serious especially if these illnesses run in your family history. It also acts as a piece of assurance if all is well.

Take some time to make these appointments and talk to your health care provider today.

Incorporate these small habits into your life today so you can reap the benefits of them in the long run !

You may have heard about intermittent fasting and its benefits. But does the thought of fasting scares you, like having to go hungry for a long time?

Here are 3 great ways to make intermittent fasting more sustainable.

But first, what is intermittent fasting?

Intermittent fasting (IF) is a cycle between periods of eating and fasting within the day. A common fasting period is the 16:8 method, also known as the Leangains diet. This means fasting for 16 hours and eating within an 8-hour window.

How does intermittent fasting help with weight loss and improve health?

Our blood sugar rises when we eat. The body then starts producing insulin allowing glucose to enter the body which provides our cells with energy. If our insulin levels are high, excess glucose stays in our body leading to fat gain.

When we fast, our body does not release insulin and this prevents excess glucose from being converted to fat.

Fasting helps to cleanse our body from toxins since it now does not have access to glucose, forcing cells to use what is remaining in the body to produce energy.

For a beginner, here are 3 ways to make IF more sustainable:

1. Lower your carbs and increase healthy fat

A high-carb diet of sugary foods and refined starches can cause a fast and sharp spike in our blood sugar levels.

Eating fewer carbs make us less hungry, helping us to sustain IF longer. Adding enough healthy fats helps us to go longer between one meal to the next.

2. Add more vegetables to your diet

Vegetables are high in minerals (such as potassium and magnesium) and contain nutrients that help heal the body from insulin resistance. The fiber in vegetables feeds the microbes in our gut, helps with insulin resistance, and decreases hunger.

Combining vegetables with good fat helps us go longer between meals and the body dictates when to eat.

3. Keep yourself busy

You won’t want to sit at home and watch the clock wondering when you can eat.

Leave the house, plan for a walk and create some activities to keep busy.

The ultimate goal to IF is to stretch out the number of hours staying fasted during the day.

Start reaping the benefits of IF today.

Acne re-appeared in my mid-30s,something I totally didn’t expect.

I had my 2nd dose of Covid-19 vaccine at the end of August 2021. Unfortunately, in September 2021, my face started breaking out (particularly at the jawline and neck area).

The pimples were red, inflamed with pus. They were itchy and painful when you touch them. Occasionally, they bleed.

I have not had acne since my teenage days, so it came as a surprise for me. I didn’t think much about it initially and applied some pimple cream.

It worsened as time passed by. I went to see a Chinese doctor for TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) therapy.

2 different TCM doctors with different approaches for the cure. One suggested a prescription to supress the pimples while the other suggested a prescription to let it all out.

Had a month of medication each, which unfortunately did not clear my acne.

26 Jan 2022

I decided to see a dermatologist who introduced me to Nimegen.

My skin journey with Nimegen

My dermatologist offered me a few options on what we can do to treat this serve acne, including antibiotics, oral contraceptives, or Isotretinoin.

I chose Isotretinoin because it seemed to be a more effective solution compared to the other 2.

Nimegen (Isotretinoin) is a form of oral Vitamin A. It reduces sebum (oil) production by up to 80% and reduce inflammation.

It also comes with its side effects, such as dryness on the skin, increase cholesterol, and liver issues.

It is Not suitable for people who are looking to have a baby as it may cause deformities.

The dosage is dependent on how severe the acne is and the individual’s body weight and lifestyle.

I started with 20mg (2 capules) per day.

After 9 days of Nimegen (on the morning before taking Covid-19 booster):

5 Feb 22

Side effects from Nimegen after 9 days

My lips were so dry that it didn’t feel they were mine. The skin was chapped and you can literally feel the stretch even just pursing your lips.

That was the main side effect for me. I continued to keep my face moisturized so that wasn’t an issue. Thankfully, I didn’t experience any dry eyes or rashes.

It has been about 1.5 months since taking the Covid 19 booster shot in February 2022 and about 2 months into my medication. I recently reduced the dosage to 10mg per day as I felt pain at the sides of my abdomen.

My skin rarely breaks out now (fingers crossed) and now what is left is acne scars.
